Each September, our team hits the ground running to put our school initiatives back into place for the year. We’re kicking off this school year offering 18 programs in partnership with 9 TDSB elementary and secondary schools. All of these 24-week programs will launch throughout the month of October.
As well, our community drop-in programs in Rexdale, Scarborough, and the Regent Park-area have all started back up after a brief summer break. These free, long-term, drop-in programs serve youth ages 10-19 and include snacks and transportation support.
We’re really excited about some of the evolution taking place in our youth justice programs! This fall, we’re returning to an open custody location in London, Ontario, where we worked many years ago. We’re implementing changes to further strengthen the programming we’ve been offering steadily for about 10 years at Brookside Youth Centre in Cobourg, and we’re piloting newly formatted consecutive 6-week sessions at Roy McMurtry Youth Centre in Brampton. After having been at RMYC since their doors opened, we’re looking forward to trying a new model that will allow us to offer our program to each residential unit as a whole.
We have BIG plans for this school year including:
- Partnering with schools to offer two parent/caregiver programs
- Piloting one new school program
- Offering our Building Blocks for Resilience professional development training for educators who work in Huron County with the Avon-Maitland School Board, and at additional schools in the GTA
- Building more opportunities for youth leadership including offering more school youth retreats
